Northwest Hamilton Photo Tour

Jason staggers around Strathcona Neighbourhood, camera in hand.

Over the several months, RTH will publish several photo-tours. Some will be walking tours of Hamilton neighbourhoods, others will be of commercial districts and ethnic neighbourhoods in Hamilton. We are blessed to live in a city with historic neighbourhoods, vibrant shopping districts and ever-growing multicultural communities.

Much of the focus in Hamilton, both at city hall and in our local media, has been centred on suburban sprawl in recent years. There seems to be this strange obsession with making Hamilton feel more like Mississuaga or Vaughn. Thankfully, Hamilton's urban neighbourhoods are already built and leave no room for monster box stores and even bigger windswept parking lots.

Despite many mistakes over the past few decades involving the needless demolition of historic properties (Here in 2006 we still haven't learned our lesson see McLister Block), Hamilton is still blessed with walkable, livable neighbourhoods that you are sure to enjoy as you rediscover your city.

This month, we feature a walking tour of the Strathcona Neighbourhood in downtown Hamilton. My wife and I moved here three years ago (her from Scarborough, me from the south Mountain) and have fallen in love with the history, churches, architecture, parks, gardens and homes of this beautiful neighbourhood.

I love living in a neighbourhood that was in existence before the automobile. Strap on your walking shoes and come discover Strathcona. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
