A Modicum of Freedom

Set in a totalitarian dystopia in the year 2084, A Modicum of Freedom explores life as a series of pre-decided personalities, moments and routines of men and women. Sound ridiculous? That's because it is.

However ridiculous the plot line may be, the writing and direction of this strange and unusual world is exceptionally clever, humourous and thought-provoking. It stirs up questions about our rights as individuals and how to rebel against our own scheduled and seemingly pre-determined lives.

I am known for being suspicious or nervous when the playwright of the show is also the lead role within it. These suspicions and fears were put to rest with the exceptional performance by actor/playwright Ryan M. Sero. His character, delivery and use of humour and wit was captivating and truly set the bar for his fellow actors.

On the whole, comedic timing and dialogue between the cast was very sharp and well played out. My only minor complaint was that the secondary characters floated in and out, feeling under used for the duration of the play.

A Modicum of Freedom is a comedy that makes the audience question the choices of freedom and authority within society. It is a refreshing addition to the Fringe and one show that should not be missed.
