City to Live-Stream Council, Committee Meetings

By RTH Staff
Published January 26, 2011

Mayor Bob Bratina's office just issued a press statement announcing that starting tonight, the City will live-stream Council and Committee meetings.

Each meeting will have a live-stream web address, linked from the agenda page for that meeting, and the streaming video will then be moved to an archive link for subsequent review.

The live-stream web address for tonight's meeting is now available.

You will be able to access live-stream links for Council and the Committee meetings along with the agendas and minutes, via the City's Agendas, Minutes and Reports page. Click on which committee you want to watch, then click on the "live" link under the agenda for that meeting.

This is great news.

I'm thrilled the City is doing this.

I want to thank Gabrielle Nicholson, Chris Ecklund, Mark Masters, The Hamilton Spectator, City Clerks, City IT, and City Facilities for all their assistance and support while I was trying to stream Council.

Open Data, Live Streaming - I'm really excited about the great changes occuring at City Hall.

Glad to see this finally happening (heard from Fred that they were working on it in 2007). I hope they do as good a job as Joey has. What's my bandwidth limit again?

I heard they have signed a contract with Sire Technologies a few weeks ago.

I'm thrilled they've done so.

The fact that Mayor Bratina disputes my work at the present time is a mere coincidence.

Sadly, because of this, I may have to attend Council tonight as to avoid the appearance that I not there due to this.

I actually want to watch Council from home - this has been my goal.

I'm just relieved that I no longer have to carry streaming - it had, sadly, started to be become a burden.

Thansk for the great work you have been doing Joey, now you can focus on watching the meetings and making commentary.

Let me second that Andrea.

Joey, I think using your energy and skills as a journalist to comment on the proceedings you will now be able to watch rather than manage would be a great outcome for all of us.

Thanks for showing the way with no personal benefit. Your efforts have been appreciated greatly!

Yes, thanks, Joey for all your efforts this way.

Interesting that this is all coming about after the reno's to City Hall. I heard that the councillors refused to strike a citizen committee to have input into the reno. One result was that the kind of wiring and feeds that would need to be put into place simply weren't there. (I am not techno savvy, but could relate to Joey's bandwidth issues) I bet this is costing more after the fact than it would have at the time of the reno. Still I am glad, though it means I will face further distractions during work hours!

Just curious, once I click on the link it just shows me the agenda. So if I click the link at 7pm and after, will I see/hear the streaming?

Thanks

Thanks Joey. But don't put your equipment away just yet: It's 7:15, and I'm clicking on 'THE LINK' to no avail - they must be 'in camera'!

If the stream works as well as the site (try getting maps, for instance) we're in for predictable unpredictability.

I ask you to remember that I've encountered numerous hiccups.

My goal has always been to add incentive for the City to do live streaming.

Let's note improvements we wish to see and work with the City to make it better.

I don't know who is taking care of the stream - I've never been approached or asked for input despite making numerous offers to do so at absolutely no charge.

Sadly, I missed the request for tender for the streaming contract, I would have tried to form a non-profit bid. That's my bad.

@Ryan

Good to know, I'll find an open source program that's more secure than Windows Media Player.

Would try VLC; cannot test, as I'm in class.

@Matt

I'm actually in the back row of the public gallery at Council. I'm sitting back and observing the meeting. (Battery will be out in an hour however)

FYI The stream either crashed, went down or was turned off just before 9PM.

Didn't stream to iphone. Didn't have time to work on why. Will try media player next time. Wish City Hall would put up a test video.

don't get me started. the city's map website is perhaps one of the worst websites ever built. It is an annoying piece of junk the odd time I've tried to use it.

Thank you to Joey Coleman for all your streams. I'm sure it's because of you that this has been pushed up the agenda!

This is good news but since I can't get the stream to work, I'm left having to consider whether the announcement wasn't a ruse to get Joey out of the way.

It's a sickening irony that with this announcement apparently this morning's meeting apparently will not be available to most people. Perhaps the announcement was meant to say that council meetings *following the satisfactory resolution of the 'stadium debate'* will be streamed?

When I link to the page now I finally see the agenda, but the non-working link to the supposed video stream has now disappeared completely.

I have grave concerns about the current mayor's integrity.

Thanks for all your work as well from me Joey. You've had an effect I'm sure.

The Spec says it will be airing a live stream today.

I'm looking for it at thespec.com, but there's no link yet. Doesn't the meeting start in ten minutes?

Things are looking up. There's a test pattern up on the Spec site. I will happily eat crow if this stream is successful. Thanks to you Joey, for everything.

I'm surprised the Spec isn't charging $10 watch to watch it.

Okay everyone,

TheSpec people are working hard. Remember, I had numerous glitches with my streams - they'll find a solution and provide a great stream.

Give them time - streaming is a lot of work and they are doing a great job thus far.

I understand that it's not straightforward, but was just trying to troubleshoot from my end.

I'm not streaming!

TheSpec is doing all the work. It is a Spectator stream using my verified LiveStream account.

I ask that you NOT give me any credit. I do not want it in any way shape or form.

This is a Spectator production - full stop.

They are doing this as a public service and I'm merely cheering them on like we all should!
