Municipal Election 2006

Eisenberger Goes Viral

By Ryan McGreal

He won't respond to RTH media inquiries, but he's on YouTube. Fred Eisenberger has posted a surprisingly well-crafted campaign ad on YouTube, a website that lets people share videos online.

Eisenberger is not accepting corporate or union donations, so it makes sense to take advantage of any service that helps to get the message out.

I'm not crazy about attack-ads.

I wouldn't call this an attack ad. Have you seen the crap they do in US?? This ad seems decent to me...he's pointing out some of the more obvious reasons why we need change at city hall. I don't know if agree with them all, but I think the ad is fine. No personal stuff towards DiIanni, just some clips of the circus that is Hamilton City Hall.

Unlike most positive ads, negative ads are valuable because they are specific. Specific issues were brought up by the ad and they should be considered at election time. As long as the ads bear scrutiny and are not personal, I have no problem with "attack ads"

Presumably, people seek to unseat and incumbent because something has ticked them off enough to do so. When it's not clear why someone is running, we're left scratching our heads.

The video does hi-light the court conviction of our Chief Magistrate on illegal campaign contributions. Some who defend the mayor might call that an attack, I consider it an important point of consideration in making my vote. Even the Spec (which did classify the video as an 'attack ad') noted it wasn't anything like what is seen in the US.

BTW, Larry: Call me... :)
