Car-Free Sundays Take Root in Toronto

By Jason Leach

Behold a place that has an idea of how cities work. Toronto is slowly starting to embrace the idea of car-free places and a recent decision is expanding the idea to more neighbourhoods.

[T]here's a movement afoot that's gaining momentum and might transform certain neighbourhoods into pedestrian-friendly villages, transforming parts of Toronto into Paris or Manhattan, at least on Sundays.

Almost four years after Pedestrian Sundays in Kensington Market began, the idea will be adopted this summer by Mirvish Village (west of Bloor and Bathurst Sts.) and Baldwin Village (north of Spadina Ave. and Dundas St. W.).

How, oh how, will the poor businesses survive with streets closed to automobiles replaced by thousands of people?

Doesn't the city of Toronto understand (like the city of Hamilton does) that cars make purchases and buy drinks on patios, not people?

Would it really hurt you to make a positive announcement without the sarcastic overtone?

The picture attached to that Star article is great. Amlani (the guy who started pedestrian free days in Kensington) is standing there looking triumphant, and a passing driver is glaring at him with what looks like utter disdain. Hilarious.

Don't be too harsh with jason, robot. As Jeff Mahoney famously said "this town can suck the smile off a happy face button" and good news gets hit with the realization that our council is too useless to pay attention to cities that 'get it' or do the right thing here.

"this town can suck the smile off a happy face button"

classic! Mahoney rocks. I'd never heard that one before.
