I will add my agreement with Ryan's overall sentiment here. Bay is a perfect street to link the SW neighbourhoods, many of the downtown's main attractions and destinations and the waterfront together in a safe, tree-lined, bike friendly street. I second the idea of a two-way, protected cycle track on the east curb lane of Bay from Herkimer to Barton. Along that entire stretch, this extra east-side lane isn't necessary. South of Bold where there is off-peak street parking on the east curb, the parking could be moved to the west curb all the way back to Herkimer. This would allow for street parking, one car lane and a two-way protected cycle track. North of Hunter there is no street parking which would allow 2 car lanes and a protected cycle track. North of Barton, the bike lanes could become traditional bike lanes painted on each curb connecting to the new Bay St bridge. North of here, traffic is light and slow enough for no bike lanes needed.

Think of how busy this bike route would be coming from Pier 4/8 and Bayfront Park all the way to south of Herkimer.
It would connect with the new bike lanes coming to Herkimer and Charlton, bike lanes on Markland, Hunter St, York, Cannon and planned cycling/multi-use path along Strachan from Bay to Ferguson. This is the sort of useful connectivity we need if we really want to make cycling safe for the 'non-spandex' crowd and for tourists/bike-share users.
