A 100 year old building will of course have higher maintenance needs than a brand new building. But it will last another few hundred years even if it's neglected. How long will the new replacement school last? And what happens when it goes to shit? These are all near sighted decisions.

What about running the schools at a lower capacity and finding alternative uses for the remaining space - board office use or leasing to other users?

There has to be a better solution. These schools are huge irreplaceable assets and they are going to be sold at an enormous loss.
