"Some of the most innovative, progressive work on street design is coming from traffic engineers, e.g. the Dutch engineer Hans Mondermann, who famously implemented a model of "shared space" in which cars, bicycles and pedestrians coexist on the street with no signage, no barriers between modes and no predetermined right of way."

I love this. Emergent behaviour is amazing, and we really, really need to explore this more. If forces everyone to be conscious and to communicate. Accident rates decrease, traffic of all sorts flows easier. Also, it dovetails nicely with ABM (agent-based modeling)
