When are we going to get to the stage, in this city, of actually aligning our infrastructure decisions with our (long range?) goals of increasing walking and cycling? It is easy to imagine what this would look like:

  1. Engineering study shows there is not enough space for four lanes of motor vehicle traffic, wide sidewalks and and cycle lanes.

  2. Obvious conclusion is that although it would be nice to have four lanes of motor vehicle traffic there just isn't the space available.

  3. Build the bike lanes and wide sidewalks.

Unless we start making these sort of decisions we will never achieve our stated goals. Interestingly, as far as I know, the city does not actually have an explicit goal of increasing motor vehicle traffic flow ... it is just seems to be the default setting for the traffic engineers.
