Raise the Hammer
I saw the fencing go around this site at James South and Charlton a week ago. I just assumed they were renovating the place - it didn't even cross my mind that the hospital would try to demolish such a historic locale.
I'm in Hamilton. I should know better by now.

the city must absolutely not allow this to happen. it's a beautiful building and, god knows, we've lost enough of those.

There is a fight for the building. It's actually owned by St. Joes and it's them that are pushing through with the demolition. I believe they want to build more office space.... Of course, it's the city that OK'd it. When I heard it on the radio the first thing I thought of was - why not build office space on top of that ugly parking garage south of St. Josephs Drive?

what is being built there? as far as I know it's now illegal to demolish a building along James or King and leave it as a parking lot (that bylaw came into effect about 30 years too late).

It's not too late....contact St. Joe's, the St. Joseph Foundation Board of Directors and your local politicians. They want to tear down an 1855 building and get this....put in a portable. Reasoning....current building is not accessible. Not good enough. There's room to build around it and adaptively reuse what is there. What a sin that this can happen in this day and age. And from an evnironmental standpoint...all that building material into landfill!! Do what you can - please!
