Agreed. I'm familiar with this discursive or rhetorical strategy and find it an appalling, but unfortunately common tactic these days.

I do, of course, have an "interest" in the matter: I stand to benefit from the Cannon bike lane as it will make it easier and more appealing to cycle from the North End to Ottawa St North and parts east once it's built.

If it was just for me or a handful of people, I could see Dreschel's point. But it isn't. He and anyone else in the city can use it and stand to benefit indirectly if, as a public realm improvement, it enhances life (and business activity) along the Cannon corridor. It is odd that he chose to frame it as he did.

I wasn't in Hamilton during the Red Hill or LINC expressway debates. Was it suggested then that councilors representing the adjacent Wards abstain from voting on them at city council?
