This is an unfair observation, as I was in the debate tonight, and I felt that all the candidates did quite well - considering that it was the --first and probably the last-- televised debate of the mayoral candidates in a city of more than half a million!

I haven't seen the edited/broadcast version, but there was some confusion among many of the candidates viz the camera angles, (which incidentally included the big three), as the monitors were placed away from the cameras, and as a result many candidates ended up looking in the wrong direction, and were distracted by the tv crew walking around trying to point candidates in the right direction - while they were speaking, often resulting in some awkward moments which may have appeared magnified in the broadcast.

Besides this, I think the debate was very well conducted, and all candidates for once got a fair shot at questions, which were handled well for the most part. The Open Session did get very spirited as expected - with candidates talking over each other at times.

The fact that the big three do have the experience of being on live camera, their performance from this aspect may have appeared better - but their answers in my opinion were standard and in most part scripted and totally lacked in new thinking or substance, and failed to address the challenges we face ahead as a community.

Tomorrow's news reports covering this debate -- for sure will present a totally differently perspective on what transpired tonight.
