Raise the Hammer

The protection of fundamental freedoms and human rights has been a concern of the United Nations since its inception. That concern has increasingly been heightened over the past decades with several conflicts raging in various parts of the world resulting in mass displacement and unseen before exodus of populations under desperate conditions in search of better lives. Women and children have borne the brunt of these conflicts and the need to protect them from the destructive impacts of conflict has never before been more germane. The challenges are enormous. Issues of prevention, monitoring and reporting of abuses and violations, and addressing impunity are measures that are readily deployable but nevertheless are challenges in their own right. The United Nations has responded in various ways and made its intentions clear through numerous Security Council Resolutions and Presidential statements. It has also established peacekeeping operations mandated to monitor and report on violations of human rights, and has established international criminal tribunals to bring to account perpetrators of gross violations of human rights and international humanitarian law. This lectures seeks to engage the public on the discussion as to whether or not the efforts so far exerted by the international community in addressing these global problems is sufficient and if not what provide an opportunity for the public to explore more methods of addressing these issues.
