Study: Airport Lands Mostly Used for Warehousing and Logistics

Citizens at City Hall (CATCH), the citizens' group that attends council meetings and reads consultants' reports so you don't have to, reports that a detailed review (PDF) of proposed land use in the city's Airport Employment Growth District (AEGD) estimates that over two thirds of the 7,800 acres (3,150 hectares) will be used for warehousing and trucking.

Not surprisingly, this will be low-density land use. That two-thirds will only provide 41 percent of the new jobs. The review reads:

It is anticipated that a large percentage share of the future employment growth in this area will be dominated by land extensive, low-density employment in the warehousing/transportation and wholesale trade sectors

The report notes further that industrial employment growth in the AEGD will be "minimal".

With great prospects like these, it's no wonder council is being asked to instruct the consultant to prepare the next step toward servicing the land.

Read Terry Cooke in today's Spec. He makes a compelling case for developing and servicing these lands....

I have also noticed that there is a lot of land that is just a bunch of warehouses. I have lived next to an airport for a few years now, and have noticed that a lot of the airplanes never get removed from their storage. I wonder if there would be a better way to use all that space. http://www.vistacargoterminal.com/
