By RTH Staff
Published March 22, 2010

The City of Hamilton has issued a press release warning that the Dundurn Stairs, which run up the Escarpment from the loop at the top of Dundurn St. to Beckett Dr./Garth St., have been damaged and may be unsafe:

Large pieces of concrete were dropped onto the steps from the top of the Escarpment and approximately 50 steps must be removed and replaced. Warning signs have been placed at the stairs. Please use extreme caution if using the stairs as an alternate transportation route or for exercise purposes.

The City notes that repair work is scheduled to begin this Thursday, March 25 and that the stairs will be closed to the public during the repairs.

Damn - I walk up the stairs every week to a night class at Mohawk. Wonder if they can start retrofitting the stairs with bike troughs as they go. Probably not by the kind of damage done, but one day those stairs are planned to be fit with a bike trough, would be nice to get a start on it.

Fixed this week! That's cool. Much better than the rail trail ascending the escarpment eastward from downtown which has been "temporarily" closed since last summer's flood.

How long is "temporary" in Hamilton municipal bureaucratise? Is it as temporary as a provincial government public transportation funding delay, for instance, or as long as the realization of a federal government commitment to openness and transparency?

Just wondering.

If it was a single lane blockage of a 5-lane road, people would be rioting in the streets.
