Globe and Mail Lauds Portland

By RTH Staff
Published November 24, 2011

Those lame, predictable hipsters at the, um, Globe and Mail just published an article titled, Portland: city of the future:

If you want to see how a metropolis of the 2020s might look, head to Portland, Ore., a city two steps in front of the rest of North America that is quietly shaping the urban future in the same way that Florence once shaped the Renaissance. No idea is too far-out here, and no experiment too bizarre, a fact epitomized by Portland's abundance of young entrepreneurs who have used clever out-of-the-box thinking to navigate the tough financial waters of the recession.

(h/t to Larry Di Ianni, who pointed this out to us.)

Why would the ex-ex-(ex-ex-)mayor bother pointing this article out to RTH, an article any Globe&Mail reader woud have seen? Why, well, looking at the twit's twit, so he could be sarcastic of course, that's why. LD, Babcock---media content in Hamilton remains mostly dead--or in LD's case, worse. Russ Powers once on CH wanted to point out on a so-called "panel" be nice to the universe Connie Smith show that there'd been some controversial actions in his riding during a federal election campaign--and mentioning this would, he seemed to feel, add to understanding of the result, his defeat, as it happened. Happy-be nice to everyone Smith thought, no, that wouldn't do, let's move on--except on TVO's election follow-up Powers had already talked about the nature of the campaign as if this was normal political discourse--which it was; even TVO's know everything host didn't tut-tut Powers. Babcock Di Ianni what's the difference? This is a town afraid of itself. Even the Hamiltonnews weeklies scoop the rest. Portland fine: but from expresswayLarry of all twitters?

I actually agree with anony above--somebody there knows their recent Hamilton history and lack of substance in the Larry & Laura TV stuff--and as for stuffed, remember LD's "blog" posts before and after his federal election trouncing? and how he tried to self serve by explaining it all away as somebody else's fault? You need astrong stomach to read that kind of stuff.

Those who read more than the catchy headline would realize this is an article for the G&M's travel section and not an essay on the futuristic urbanicity of Portland by any stretch of the imagination. Larry is probably saying "Bazinga!" right now, hipster that he is.

I'm not aware of any regulations preventing us from reporting articles in the 'travel' section. I mean, I know it wasn't written by Richard Florida, but does that make it less relevant? Perhaps, more relevant?

Larry rides around on a vespa and hosts a cable-access show - definitely almost a hipster.

I think the comment from 'anony' that got nearly cancelled out is a comment about Hamilton media and the people in it. I don't think it was intended to be flattering to the LD or even smily Laura. But so what? As 'anony said--"Even the Hamiltonnews weeklies scoop the rest. Portland fine: but from expresswayLarry of all twitters?"
Right on.
