Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) trustee Judish Bishop just sent notice to families in Wards 1 and 2 to report that the Ontario Labour Relations Board has ordered elementary teachers not to participate in today's day of political action.

The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has issued the following statement to its members:

The Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) has ruled that the Political Protest scheduled to take place on January 11, 2013 violates the Ontario Labour Relations Act (OLRA).

We will abide by the decision of the OLRB. We respect the provisions of the Act - something we have requested the Minister and government to do for almost a year.

In Hamilton, the HWDSB has said that schools will be open today.

the province should be blamed for this last minute change, but somehow it will be spun to be the teachers' fault. i fear for the future of labour in our province.

Actually the teachers are being forced to reap what the financial sector and the regulators sowed. We're in deep debt because of the global financial meltdown, that was NOT caused by teachers. Do you think that's fair?

I fear for a society where deliberate efforts are made to paint teachers as antagonists and so many people seem to buy into it.

Teachers sow the seeds of knowledge and reap the acrimony of the ignorant.

Please consider attending, or spreading the word about, a solidarity strike. Tentatively planned for January 25, the next scheduled PA day for HWDSB schools.

I stand in solidarity with the teachers, however, in my view, all the teachers and the support workers should be one unit, not separated into units, thus it makes units fight amongst themselves, one unit settles, the other fights on.

All other unions should be out in support for their brothers and sisters, in this battle. The unions need to become more militant, they lost their grassroots instincts many years ago with the formation of the Rand formula, thus limiting actions they can take.

The only reason they went to work today, is because of the possiblity of being fined, which in my view, some battles are worth fighting for. Who the hell does McQuinty and all the other politicians before him, that enacted legislation to keep the working class at bay, think they are anyways. How many unorganized workers see their rights not being enforced by the Ministry of labour?

What affects one, affects us all!

Actually, they were broken apart into different unions for that exact reason - divide and conquer. The Harris Tories broke up the larger union into units of support staff, janitors, and principals to force some to be at work while others were on strike, to infight, and to weaken.
