'Gridlock' on Wilson Street at Wentworth

By RTH Staff
Published May 27, 2013

RTH reader Bob Berberick sent in a photograph of Wilson Street that he took on Friday, May 24 at 10:56 AM. The photo faces west from Wentworth, looking upstream on the one-way Wilson. A major collision had the street reduced to one lane (the white truck parked on the left is a City vehicle).

There are literally no cars stuck behind the collision or even approaching from as far as you can see up the street.

Berberick writes, "Probably room for a bike lane!"

Would be wonderful! It could link up with Victoria Ave North's new lanes by the General.
I live on Wilson, I agree and would love to see that.

"yeah but that was at 11am when most of us were AT WORK. If it was at 8am when we were on our way to work it would have been pure mayhem. Hippie cyclists get a job!"

SIGH

Sorry but this "hippie" is retired.
I suppose that us casual cyclists don't deserve room to ride safely at anytime to accomodate a 2 hour rush hour. I suggest you try a bicycle. You too might join us hippies.

Pretty sure 'most hamiltonians'' comment was sarcasm.

Wilson & Cannon have enough room for bike lanes. They'd need to be made with a barrier though, as the current Parking/Turning lanes are considered "Passing Lanes"

This is just it! The number of times of seen pickups ding twice the speed limit in the curb lanes frightens me.

My question is why aren't the cops issuing speeding tickets, I guess they are far to busy protecting all the pedestrians on Burlington Street.

Has anyone ever received a seeding ticket on Cannon/ Wilson?

Because those cops don't want to die. Roadside work such as speed traps is inevitably dangerous. covert roadside work where your intention is to trap a driver going too fast? Doubly so. And where would you have the driver pull over so you can walk over to the driver side and chat with him? The right lane of live traffic?

Think about it - would you want to stand on Cannon with a radar gun and step out in front of the wall of traffic to flag down a driver? Neither would I. I'd rather be on Burlington or where it's only an occaisional car and there's a nice safe low-traffic right lane I can guide the driver to pull over upon and whatnot.

Well in that case... I demand that the crossing guards on Cannon be paid the same as a Junior police officer. They seem like nice people, and they should be compensated fairly.

Kitchener will be helping us pay for things down the road whether they like it or not...they are planning for the future, and luring new urban investment. We're building high school bleachers and enjoying life as a 20 minute city. Which city sounds like it's setting itself up to be a beggar to other, more prosperous cities in the future?
