The Bottom of the Cup

The Bottom of the Cup is a short and interesting genre piece. The premise is as follows: a woman, who suspects her husband of cheating, visits a Russian gypsy for a Tarot reading, but all is not as it seems. A gun is revealed, and with this revelation commences the mystery of the play.

For a genre piece, the play moves well, with a steady pace of revelations throughout. Although one could easily get lost in a plot like this, the writing is clear.

The actors do a good job of delivering their lines, but there's not as much chemistry between the actors as I would have liked. It just seemed like an exchange of texts, as opposed to a dramatic engagement.

Apart from the chemistry between the actors, director Mike Ranieri does a fine job without unnecessary distractions. His direction keeps the audience focused on the main action. In the performance I saw, there were only two people in the audience. Surely, this piece deserves more than that.

There is a plethora of noir pieces at Fringe this year. This is one of the better ones that you'll see. And if you don't like it, it's over in a jiffy.
