Portland #1 in US for Cycling

By Jason Leach
Published June 21, 2007

If it isn't rail (they are now upgrading their LRT to use the Bombardier trains that Paris uses) it's bicycles: according to the US Census Bureau, Portland has the highest rate of cycling in the US, eight times higher than the national average.

May I add from having lived there that Hamilton is more compact and walkable / cyclable than Portland. Well, Hamilton could be. Five-lane mega-highways downtown don't really encourage cycling.

Jason Leach was born and raised in the Hammer and currently lives downtown with his wife and children. You can follow him on twitter.
