Unhappy Thanksgiving for Centre Mall Farmers' Market Vendors

It is ironic that today of all days, Hamilton is on the verge of losing one of its most important sources of locally produced food.

According to a recent CATCH report, vendors at the Centre Mall Farmer's Market recently discovered that they are not part of the Centre Mall redevelopment plans and will be evicted at the end of this year. Mall management had previously assured vendors they were part of the plans.

Management did not give vendors notice of their rapidly approaching eviction, they made the discovery only after making their own enquiries.

Visitors to Saturday's market were greeted with a sign asking them to contact their city councillor and Centre Mall management at 905-547-1629.

The 52 year old market runs Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday 8:00am to 5:00pm from May to November, and Friday and Saturday 8:00am to 4:00pm year-round.

Unlike the Hamilton Farmer's Market, the majority of vendors at Centre Mall are producers, so the loss of this market will seriously limit to access to locally grown food within the city.

What about using the ferguson Train station downtown as the farmer's market....there's a steady growth in the hood, might do well, plus lots of parking, and certainly add to the vibrancy of the area...

Good idea. Tell your councillor. According to the Spec, council is supportive of keeping the market going, but it never hurts to give them a nudge.
