Light Rail

Light Rail in the Spectator

By Ryan McGreal
Published April 16, 2008

Today's Hamilton Spectator includes an op-ed piece by your humble editor (with invaluable help from the Hamilton Light Rail volunteers) that seeks to set the record straight about the methodology of the city's Rapid Transit Feasibility Study:

In fact, today's paper is chock-a-block with articles related to light rail:

  • Erika Engel, How bus rapid transit, light rail transit work in other cities;
  • Robert Howard, Don't stall ideas, an editorial rebuke against Councillor Lloyd Ferguson;
  • Ryan McGreal, Rapid transit study misses big picture;
  • Eric McGuinness, Will it be bus or rail?;
  • Stavros Rougas, Lead the way in transit, a letter to the editor; and
  • Paul Wilson, Is downtown going back to the future?
  • Ryan McGreal, the editor of Raise the Hammer, lives in Hamilton with his family and works as a programmer, writer and consultant. Ryan volunteers with Hamilton Light Rail, a citizen group dedicated to bringing light rail transit to Hamilton. Ryan wrote a city affairs column in Hamilton Magazine, and several of his articles have been published in the Hamilton Spectator. His articles have also been published in The Walrus, HuffPost and Behind the Numbers. He maintains a personal website, has been known to share passing thoughts on Twitter and Facebook, and posts the occasional cat photo on Instagram.

    Great piece! It's so important to get the facts out right now so people can understand the stakes and council can make the right decision. Everything we do helps, letters to the editor, talking to neighours, going to public meetings, all of it! We really need to show that this is something Hamiltonians care about, that we're not going to have a "rebellion' if we trade a driving lane for a modern streetcar.

    LRT, here we come!!!

    Fantastic article, Ryan. I read it this morning in the Spec while I had breakfast.

    Congrats, by the way, on getting so many op-eds published in the Spec lately - it feels like hardly a week goes by without another well-researched, well-reasoned piece from you landing in the Opinion pages.

    The facts are out there and they support the case for LRT. Thanks for getting them out to the public.

    Kudos to the spec, as well, for all the coverage they're giving this. It would be so easy to just ignore it until it dies. Maybe there's a change upon the air...?

    Ryan, your editorial was brilliant! Tons of examples, logically argued, beautifully written. Way to go. I can't wait to ride on Hamilton's LRT!
