There is a legitimate use of one-way streets to help make walking, cycling or public transit the fastest, safest and most convenient way of going from A to B. Here are some examples of right and wrong uses of one-way streets. Wonder what category Hamilton's one-ways fall into? Mostly (OK almost all) wrong uses.

Here are some more examples of good one-way street use.

There are also some good examples in Toronto.

Ironically enough, we actually should keep most of the one-way streets in Durand. All we need is permeable neighbourhood connectors to filter out cut-through rat-running car drivers. Then keeping the existing one-way streets and adding counterflow lanes for cyclists creates a people-friendly residential neighbourhood.
