I first came to Dubai fourteen years ago as a dotcom engineer with a foundling company. I continue to represent that company now employing six-hundred people and spend eleven months of every year in residence there and I have seen much progress. I have also seen things that I wish that I hadn't! I make a good living and I am human and wear blinkers! Is there slavery in Dubai? By definition or not I would say Yes! Is there poverty? In the midst of so much wealth the worker's compounds are sites of abject Poverty, unequaled even in other states of the Emeritus where I frequently travel. Are there slave-traders? Yes, they pose as employment agents in agencies which I can honestly say our company shuns. Are the Police corrupt? I can't say but in the midst of so much wealth their salaries are inadequate..so I leave the question open. Are the bad things one hears about living in Dubai true? Yes! Are the good things one hears about living in Dubai true? Yes! To deal with one celebrity, Tiger Woods, who first pooh-pooed the criticism of Human Rights groups who claimed sweat shops in third world countries by continuing to sponsor Nike and when Nike relented Tiger Didn't! I have met him here on four occasions and I am sure that he has heard the slave-labour stories and like everyone else who is making money, like me, just hopes that it isn't true..all of the time knowing that..just maybe.
