Ahh...nothing like a good ramble. I heartily agree - everything is connected. Though as my old anthro prof put it, modern North American society is the most geographically distant of any society known to us, other than the Inuit. But even then, only when they break off into nuclear family units (most societies tend to work in extended families and communities). We need to stop measuring communities by telecommunications.

Owners in every professional league are constantly crying about losing money, so, off the hop, a potential buyer knows he is probably purchasing an expensive lemon.

I love this analogy, it fits perfectly. Like high-priced cars, sports teams have become status symbols masquerading as investments. Sadly, this is true of their relationship to cities as well as their owners.
