The planet itself will probably survive, barring some new kind of weapon or supercollider disaster. Life, too, will likely make it through in some form or another. Perhaps some humans may even survive peak oil, global warming or a nuclear war. It's amazing how Stoic people will become when faced with these kinds of issues, even when they scream bloody murder about the simplest measures taken against them (like a carbon tax).

I'm not saying a carbon tax is the solution. But if they'd done it ten years ago, there's a good chance we'd be in a better position in terms of fuel price and supply today. We urgently need to find a way to reinvest the massive profits of fuel industries into escaping the cycle of dependence, rather than strengthening it.
