Could these be the reason for less miles traveled? Higher gas prices at a time of Recession?

Many people out of work & not going to work?

People are car pooling?

People not traveling for holidays? (no money)

People attempting to find work closer to home? (Good luck with finding any jobs, in some places in the U.S..)

I can see Why the averages have been falling, but do these stats reflect how many people are riding bikes? (which is the topic here)

Maybe more people are using public transit or walking?

Can people afford to buy a used bike?

Is putting a roof over your head, & buying food a better way to spend $200.00(the amount suggested for 'putting a bike together'.) If a family is living in their car, can they justify buying a bike?
