highwater is completely correct: it is a real shame that people don't concern themselves with the issue of maintaining a community's schools because they have no direct expertise or experience (or whatever). It should almost certainly be a priority when discussing the specific topic of how to make a place good to raise a child: it is nearly impossible to raise a child in a place that has no or too few schools.
