"Where councillors saw a chance of drawing people with money into Hamilton’s core, others saw only the potential of more families devastated by g@mbling. A Hamilton C@sino No committee was soon born and the push started for a referendum on the question in the 1997 municipal election. Hamilton residents were clear in their choice, voting 64 per cent against the idea."

In the 1997 municipal election, 77,782 votes were cast. 64% of that voting population comes out at 49,780 individuals -- about 15% of Hamilton's population at the time.

In the 2010 municipal election, 142,932 votes were cast. 64% of that voting population would come out at 91,131 individuals, slightly less than the total number of ballots cast in Wards 1-9 in that election.
