The rail-trail access accross the old train bridge is ok, but there are two problems:
Its much harder to discover than Longwood - this is obviously not that big a deal since if you are considering commuting by bike to westdale you can easily look it up
There is no way to cross Main West on a bike (or, for that matter, a car) between Emerson and Longwood. You literally have to get off your bike and use a 2-phase crosswalk, which takes forever. I suppose you could come up Dow Avenue on to Main and then take a left-hand turn onto Newton Ave...but that is literally insane, even for a bike-warrior.
