Word on the Street

Idle No More Solidarity March

  • Date: Saturday, January 05, 2013
  • Time: 1:00 PM
  • Location: Dundurn Plaza
  • Address: King Street West and Dundurn Street North, Hamilton ON (Google Maps)

On December 10th 2012 a national day of action took place with a callout for “all people to join in a revolution which honours and fulfills Indigenous sovereignty which protects the land and water”.

Since that day Idle No More has resonated with the people and spread quickly throughout the world, from Saskatoon to Edinburgh. Slowly we are all coming together to begin the fight for a better future.

Grassroots organizers in the Hamilton, ON area are asking for your support and solidarity by joining us in a solidarity march within the area this Saturday January the 5th. Our goal is to bring awareness to the cause, build community and solidarity through actions and to increase the pressure on the government to address and resolve issues pertaining to land and water protection, as well as indigenous sovereignty.

I heard on the radio that this march was going to go onto the 403 in a pattern such as this: Dundurn to King, King onto the 403, 403 to Aberdeen exit, Aberdeen to Longwood, Longwood to Main, Main to Dundurn.

If this is the case, I trust you will be following the Highway Traffic Act with regards to pedestrians on the highway:

http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/html/statute...

Duties of pedestrian when walking along highway 179. (1) Where sidewalks are not provided on a highway, a pedestrian walking along the highway shall walk on the left side thereof facing oncoming traffic and, when walking along the roadway, shall walk as close to the left edge thereof as possible. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 179 (1).

You will not be blocking the highway at any time, correct? Same for the roadways?

Sadly, they did block the highway, and with police consent. What do we pay these people to do? These 'protestors' are clearly breaking the law but the police are more than happy to help them do so. If I were to do this with about 200 additional people we'd all be turned away or taken to jail. Sad there's this double standard in our province.
